A change in personal circumstances may necessitate a change to your existing immigration permission (stamp). Individuals holding a valid Irish Residence Permit (IRP card) may be eligible to apply to vary, extend, or change their current permission.

For instance, after holding a Critical Skills Employment Permit for two years, you may qualify for a more beneficial permission category.

Note that applications cannot be made on an expired permission, and submitting an application does not automatically extend your existing permit's validity.
It is therefore essential to apply well in advance of expiry if you meet the relevant criteria.

Each permission type carries distinct eligibility requirements and entitlements—such as the right to work, study, or retire in Ireland.

A change in your situation may affect your current immigration status.

Holders of short-stay visitor permissions (up to 90 days) or those on a Working Holiday Authorisation (Stamp 1) are not permitted to change their immigration status while within the State. You must depart on or before the expiry of your current permission.

However, an exception may be considered only in the case of genuinely exceptional and unforeseen circumstances arising during your stay.
